How to Memorize Scripture

How to Memorize Scripture

Can I really learn how to Memorize Scripture?

how to memorize scriptureWell, you can actually. It just takes a little bit of effort, and with anything requiring effort we all need some sort of motivation.

I remember back when I was a young Christian, all excited and keen to impress my new-found brothers and sisters (well especially the sisters!)

I was keen to learn how to memorize scripture and to be able to quote bible verses at will.  Was my heart totally pure about it? Maybe, maybe not. But I can tell you I was motivated.

Nonetheless, God loves it when we commit his verse to our heart.

Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.Deuteronomy 11:18 (NIV)

So what does it actually mean to fix God’s words in your heart and mind? Perhaps it’s a bit like “pray continuously”, and means to be alert and thoughtful of the Bible’s teachings as you go about your day. In practice a great way to do this is to memorize Bible verses and keep them front of mind.

For many of us the thought of memorizing the Bible makes us think of getting our kids to learn their morning lessons. In fact it’s something I try to do each week with the kids in my Sunday School class

But in fact it can be quite powerful to memorize things. If you can memorize an encouraging scripture and attach a positive emotion to it you can more easily recall that emotion when reflect on the scripture. It’s a bit like music. Can you remember the songs of your youth and how they made you feel. Let the scriptures become “classics” to you.

Top 5 Tips on How to Memorize Scripture

1. Pick a simple, meaningful verse.

Start with something short and simple that speaks to you. Perhaps it’s one of your favourites that you already half-know and love. Maybe it’s something that’s relevant to you right now and God has put it on your heart. Even better! If you choose to memorize bible verses that strike your heart you’ll both remember them and be impacted by them.

2. Write it!

My little girls teacher was telling me at our last parent-teacher night how he loves to teach handwriting as it helps the kids to remember the words for spelling.

It will work for you too. I don’t mean typing it on the screen either! The actual act of holding a pen and forming the letters on the paper sends signals to the brain leaving a “motor memory,”. This actually makes it easier for the brian to recall the information contained in the act of writing – cool!

3. Pray it!

Speaking words aloud is a great way to help you remember. You might as well include them in your daily prayer. A great place to do this is in the car on the way to work or dropping off the kids on the school run. It doesn’t matter where you do it, but that you do it. If you want to know how to memorize scripture, well praying about it beats pretty much anything.

Ask God for help to not only remember the verse, but to better understand it, and to gain wisdom and insight so you can use the power of the scripture more fully in your life.

4. Display it!

It’s a bit like remembering your multiplication tables in primary school. Write your verses out on post it notes or make posters and put them wherever you like.

The usual suspects would include the fridge, the bathroom mirror, the back of the toilet door. One of my favorite spots is a post-it note inside the flap of my wallet!

5. Rinse and Repeat!

No matter which ways you choose how to memorize scripture just stick at it. Form the habit by doing it until it becomes a completely natural extension of who you are!

It’s actually easier than you think. See what tips works best for you. You’ll certainly have nothing to lose by spending time meditating and thinking about God’s Word.
